Menhirs literally dot the Brittany countryside! One of the most exciting events you can experience while out biking the back roads is to come across a lonely standing stone. These stones have stood vigil to the history of countless generations of people. Often not found on the map, it is amazing to stumble upon them on the edge of some field. If you had been zooming by in your car you would have missed it altogether! Biking is the BEST way to take in all of the Brittany countryside.
Menhirs (standing stones) range from small 2m tall stones to giant pillars of 20+m weighing over 300 tons! The current custodians of these megaliths, the Bretons, have a curious respect for their presence, often building right next to a stone or , as in the example to the left, farming around them. To these people the stones are a respected part of the landscape. |
