The
most widely known alignements or stone rows are those in and around the Carnac Village area. This coastal area of Brittany
is located on the Atlantic Ocean. The area itself is sheltered by the Bay of Quiberon, with the coastline known as the Côte des Mégalithes. Within a 12-km radius of Carnac-Ville stands thousands of megaliths, including the famous Kermario alignements of some 1,029 stones! |

It is not clear
that these rows were used for astronomical events or other rites. Rows of stones are found through out Brittany. It appears that certain rows were used for rites of death. Often associated with alignements are stone circles, or cromlechs, similar to those of Britain. Shown at left, is the cromlech found in Carnac-Ville. The cromlech was always placed on higher ground with the stone rows advancing towards it with ever larger stones. These stone circles appear to be used for large gatherings. |

Outside the Carnac region there are a scattering of stone alignements, some in nearly every region of Brittany, including rows near Dinan in the Côte d'Armor, an easy ride from Trévé. On the left are rows found near St. Just in the Ille-Et-Vilaine. |
